First Impressions

First impressions matter. Why? Because one interaction can kickstart a great business relationship.

We often form judgments about someone within the first few seconds of meeting them, and those initial impressions can be surprisingly hard to change. In business, that first interaction can determine whether a prospect leans in or looks away, whether a follow-up call gets answered, or whether an opportunity gets a second look.

So, what helps make a strong first impression?

Preparation is the foundation. Knowing who you’re talking to and understanding what matters to them shows that you respect their time. Do your homework. Know their business, understand why you’re meeting, and be ready to have a meaningful conversation.

Beyond preparation, the small things often carry more weight than people expect. Be genuine. Listen actively instead of simply waiting for your turn to talk. Ask good questions. And when you say you’re going to do something, follow through.

Confidence matters, too. But confidence isn’t about being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about being clear, consistent, engaged and prepared. People remember how you communicate and whether they feel like you’re truly paying attention to what they need.

At the end of the day, making a great first impression isn’t about being perfect. It’s about showing someone, right from the start, that you’re reliable, you value their time, and you’re someone they can trust and want to do business with.

Get that right, and everything that follows gets a little easier.
